First Wilderness: My Quest in the Territory of Alaska

Sam Keith was an American adventurer, Marine veteran, educator and writer (1922-2003). In his first book, One Man's Wilderness, originally published in 1973, Keith transformed the journals of his longtime friend, Dick Proenneke, into an Alaska classic. When it was re-issued in 1999, One Man's Wilderness won a National Outdoor Book Award, and became the narration basis for the PBS documentary Alone in the Wilderness, which through Proenneke's home movies shows him building a cabin in Twin Lakes, AK, where he lived by himself for many years.

This blog is dedicated to a new Sam Keith book, First Wilderness: My Quest in the Territory of Alaska, in which we see Keith's own time in Alaska from 1952-1955, where he and Proenneke became lifelong friends. We intend to share photos of Sam Keith's adventures, including never-before-seen images of Dick Proenneke, letters to Keith from Proenneke, and background information from Keith's life.
